Frequently asked questions
How the club works
The short version: one well-equipped airplane at PTI, a low-risk non-equity structure, and 20 founding members to get it started.
The club
What is the Greensboro Flying Club?
A member-run flying club forming at Piedmont Triad International Airport (KGSO). Members share one well-equipped airplane and the work of running the club, so flying costs less and the airplane is cared for by people who fly it.
Where will the club be based?
PTI (Piedmont Triad International, KGSO) in Greensboro is our home field. Securing hangar, tie-down, or pull-through space there is one of the founding tasks, and we welcome leads.
Who is organizing the club?
A founding leadership team that brings 50 years of combined flying club experience. Once the club is established, members will seat a board of officers to run it.
What does “non-equity” mean?
Members don’t buy shares in an airplane. The club leases a single aircraft from a private owner. The club never buys the plane, carries no loan, and has no fixed lease payment: the owner is paid only for hours actually flown.
Membership dues fund insurance, hangar, inspections, and maintenance. This structure keeps the club’s financial risk low while we prove out demand.
Membership
What does membership cost?
Membership has three parts: a one-time initiation fee, monthly dues, and an hourly wet rate for flying, with fuel included. The founding terms are designed to come in well under typical rental rates for a comparably equipped aircraft.
We share the full founding terms directly with everyone who registers interest.
When do monthly dues start?
Only once the aircraft is on our flightline, not before.
Is there a minimum number of flight hours?
No. There is no minimum flight-hour requirement, ever.
Will the membership terms change later?
Once the board is seated, it will likely revisit the initiation fee for future members. Founding members who commit now lock in the founding terms.
Who can join?
Anyone who shares a passion for general aviation is welcome to register interest, from long-time pilots to people returning to flying. Flying the club aircraft will depend on checkout and insurance requirements, which the club’s Chief Pilot will administer.
The aircraft & flying
What aircraft will the club fly?
We’re targeting a well-equipped Cessna 172 or comparable four-seat trainer. The equipment level we have in mind includes glass-panel flight displays, a digital autopilot, a WAAS GPS navigator, and ADS-B In and Out.
The exact aircraft is not final. An individual owner is willing to place an aircraft with the club under reasonable terms, and that arrangement may be how the club launches.
How will scheduling work?
Members will reserve the aircraft through an online booking system. Our Technology Manager role covers running the club’s booking, financial, and web systems.
How will maintenance be handled?
Inspections and maintenance are funded through membership dues. The club’s Maintenance Chief will be the point of contact with our mechanic (A&P) for scheduling work and tracking squawks.
How are safety and proficiency handled?
The club’s Chief Pilot, a CFI or CFII, serves as check pilot and sets operations rules that support FAA and insurance requirements, including checkouts, flight reviews, and ongoing proficiency.
Founding & deadlines
What is the founding deadline?
The club moves forward only if 20 members commit and pay their initiation fee by October 15, 2026. We ask that you reply by October 8, 2026.
Why reply by October 8 if the deadline is October 15?
Replying a week early gives the founders time to process sign-ups and payments before the deadline.
How do I commit as a founding member?
Register your interest and choose “Ready to commit as a founding member.” We’ll follow up directly with the membership terms and payment instructions for the initiation fee.
Please don’t send payment through this website.
What happens if the club doesn’t reach 20 members?
Initiation fees are deposited directly into the club’s bank account. If we don’t reach 20 by the deadline, every initiation fee is refunded in full from that account, no dues are ever charged, and the club will not move forward on this basis.
Volunteering
What volunteer roles does the club need?
- Base of Operations: help secure hangar, tie-down, or pull-through space at PTI.
- Chief Pilot (CFI/CFII): check pilot for operations rules supporting FAA and insurance requirements.
- Accountant / Bookkeeping: club finances, dues collection, and reporting.
- Board and officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, Membership Officer, Operations Officer, Archivist.
- Maintenance Chief: point of contact with our mechanic for scheduling and tracking squawks.
- Technology Manager: the club’s financial, booking, and web systems.
Do I have to volunteer to join?
Volunteering isn’t required to register interest. A club this size only works when members step up and help build it, so if any role fits your skills, please let us know on the form.
